Research into title sequences

A title sequence is one of the key elements when making a film. A successful title sequence should typically have the title of the film and the cast members included; complemented by music and sound to make the piece more appealing and interesting to the audience.
A title sequence should ideally also give a clue to the audience of the genre of the film, for example a horror film would stereotypically have dark colours and dull sounds, in comparison to a comedy where the title sequence may have many colours and lively sounding music in order to establish the setting and tone.

From the two title sequences shown, there is a significantly clear distinction that both films are of a different genre. As evidenced in "The Incredibles", the bold colours, images and music included in the sequence clearly state that this can be a family friendly film. From the bbfc certificate rating of "U" for the film, this is reinforced through how the sequence is presented to the audience and is overall successful in clearly stating what content could be expected. Furthermore, the title of "The Incredibles" can clearly portray a action, superhero movie which is a common genre amongst many young children.
In comparison this, the colours of the title sequence in "seven" portray a dramatic change in genre as more dull and dreary colours are represented, suggesting this can be a film of thrilling events. In addition to this, a star cast of Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt suggest how this may be a more mature film, as both actors are well known for action movies with a more mature audience. Overall, the excessive use of jump cuts create tension which remains throughout the film, supported by the bbfc rating of an "18" which clearly informs the viewer of strong violence and images/content unsuitable for anyone below this age category.
These distinguishes can be recognised just through the viewing of the title sequence therefore shows how important a title sequence is to intrigue the viewer and give them brief clues as to what content can be included throughout the film.
