Title sequence research

  • A title sequence is a method by which films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound.

Zodiac
in the opening title sequence od the 2007 mystery-thriller we get a glimpse into the mooring routine of a father and son in the late 1960's in San Francisco. We are presented with the structure of the story, large city, single dad, young child. After all, this is a turn on the true story of the zodiac killer.

Catch me if you can

This is an animated retro title sequence that sets both the scene and time period of the film, it gives the viewer an idea of the plot summery and also keeps them in suspense of what is happening and the up coming events of the film. Further more the mysterious digetic sound sets the genre of the film as the main character we see spends the majority of the time hiding his identity and keeping out of the spotlight, the main character also seems to move smoothly throughout the whole length of the title sequence and this puts across the idea of him trying to fool people and stay unidentified. Finally there is a lot of indications of transport that suggests that he is on the move a lot and linking with the fact he is trying to keep out of the way of someone.

Casino Royale
The start of the instrumental is from the original James Bond and it is accompanied by a gun shot, this makes the audience aware of the genre of the film and the instrumental builds up tension straight away then defending to a guitar solo then releasing the titles for the film. The first few seconds indicate masculinity and connotations that are associated with masculinity that enforces the genre and the audience, at around one and a half minutes into the title sequence we see a queen from playing card, with a gun target on her face suggesting danger as she has red lips and dark features, and this in forces the idea of a 'game' and this demonstrates what the film is based around.

Vertigo
The opening sets the atompsphe of extreme anxiety and suspense, we see a female character that is clearly on edge and is not comfortable with the viewers scrutiny, this introduces some conventions from the thriller genre such as paranoia, anxiety and notion of looking, she seems to be being watched. Her lips are constantly twitching suggesting she is somewhat nervous and shows us an examination of the characters physical features. A series of graphical geometric shapes begin to emerge from the distance and fit the screens captivity then when one disappears we are faced with another.
