- Digetic sound is used when for a noise or dialogue is made prominent within a scene and creates an enigma and suspense.
- non-digetic can consist of a voice over when it is used to show how a character is thinking or feeling. Also sound can be used to represent music to fit the scene giving the audience a deep of what the film will consist of.
In the 1960 film Pshyco by Alfred Hitchcock sounds included are stabbing sounds and this adds to the suspense as it gives it that chilling feel. The sound used consists of digetic sound of running water which suggest a calm atmosphere for the character. The sound of running water soon fades and the sound changes to non digetic music adds to the suspense and compliments thee fast pace editing to fit the genre of the film and adds to the tension; following this we hear stabbing sounds to give off the impression of danger and thriller as the murder is brutal. Finally on the clip, non digetic sound is used again but slowed down to add to the feel and the slowing down of the editing and it fits well with the genre, and this is typically seen in thriller movies.
