Similar Films by Leah McCallum

Similar films to our short film

I  researched into similar films based on genre, narrative content and the  characters. The narrative content of the similar films will be our inspiration for our short film Playback.

Strange Days
The Floppy disc that allows people to experience the contents
on the disc.
PLOT:Strange days features a former police officer Lenny Nero who becomes involved in the illegal sale of virtual reality discs, also known as bootlegs which allows users to experience the emotions and past experiences of others. The contents of the disc are typically tawdry and staged, however, Nero anonymously receives a clip of a rape and murder. The murder tape sends Lenny on a spiral in which he must enlist a friend to help find the killer. Among the investigation of hunting down the killer, Lenny and his friend Mace discover a vast conspiracy regarding the police Lenny once worked for. Strange Days is set in the millennium of a dystopian future where technology has advanced but the world has collapsed. The streets are filled with crime and murder, there is no justice for anyone. The state of the world leads to an uprising of a gang that wishes to overrule the police.
The protagonist Lenny Nero is an isolated protagonist despite being successful and business like in what he does. He takes solace in his own private bootleg collection where he fantasises of a life with his ex girlfriend whom is with the notorious Philo.
Lenny Nero: Costume- Tie, trousers, blazer.

Strange Days was the inspiration for our film idea as it features the playback experiences. The protagonist of our film will have a lonely life where most of her time is taken up by the illegal trade of the Playback tapes. Lenny Nero wears a cheap suit and takes a briefcase with him on his sales, we have decided to emulate this style for our protagonist as it depicts a sense of professionalism.

Point of view rape
Similar to our film:  The idea of virtual reality technology where you can experience different feelings and emotions of another person is highly similar to our short film, it is also similar in the fact it is futuristic for its time and set in a dystopian future. Within our film the experiences are viewed in a point of view perspective, this not only includes the audience in the scene, it also indicates that the user is seeing and acting it out before them. The use of point of view perspective is used also in the same way in the film Strange Days. The headset is also similar in how the customers can watch the footage.
The S.Q.U.I.D which activates the discs contents and allows them
to feel the experience on the disc.

Brainstorm
PLOT: Brainstorm features the virtual reality aspect which allows people to wear a headpiece that enables them to experience certain situations whilst sat down.  It centres around researchers who develop a system that allows the recording and playback of a persons thoughts on video tapes. The project however becomes dangerous for those involved as they begin using the technology to explore intense sexual and near death experiences.

The Headset

Similar to our film: The concept of allowing people to experience a persons thoughts/memories via a headset is similar to our short film where people can experience other peoples experiences via a cassette tape. The technological aspect is also similar to our film as we suggest a new technology to the audience. The headset is similar in the ways it uses cognitive ability to allow users to experience things such as roller coaster in the comfort of their own homes, our device is also attached to the head in order to have these experiences.
A sexual experience via the headset

Minority Report
A Precog
PLOT:Minority report is set in the distant future of 2054 and features futuristic technology that allows all crime to be eliminated as the police use use three gifted humans named pre cogs who can see into the future to predetermine a criminals crime before it has even happened.

The futuristic advertising
Similar to our film: It is set in the future and features futuristic technology that is high tech and advanced, for example, advertising is holographic images that specifically identify an individual when in the vicinity. The future can be identified within this film via the cars that are futuristically designed. It is similar to the short film as it explores a future where the police have a totalitarian power over the citizens and again translates a futuristic product to the audience,
