Most material released is copyright, means reproducing and using for profit without the owner’s permission illegally.
Copyright is a legal right that grants the creator of original work exclusive rights to use and distribute with the intention of enabling the creator to receive compensation for their intellectual effort.
Film piracy- downloading, uploading, linking to a providing access to unauthorised copies of movies or tv shows on the internet and making or selling unauthorised copies.
30% of Britain has acted on some form of piracy either through streaming content.
It costs institutions 500 million a year.

Negatives for audiences
· Bad quality videos if film has just come out in cinema, usually filmed on handheld camera at the back of cinema.
· Sellers of pirated copies have no guarantee of quality meaning customers can’t get refunds.
Benefits of piracy for institutions
· Can give a film a larger recognition
· People who have watched the pirated copy and enjoyed it to go and view it at the cinema, buy it on DVD or participate in exchange or viral marketing. For example they can share it on social networking sites such as Facebook, informing friends about it.
· Can be recommended via word of mouth
Negatives of piracy for institutions
· Studios loss of money: Piracy takes a large amount of revenue from institutions. There has been a worldwide loss of 75 billion dollars from online piracy.
· Job losses, cuts. Cinemas making less profit.
The research of piracy has allowed us with the insight on how it can affect audiences and institutions and has also prevented us from using copyrighted material within our film. All materials used within our film has been granted for us to use it via permission of the creator.
