Research into title sequences

A title sequence is used to present the title of the film/tv show, key production and cast members while letting the audience in on a little what the film is about, utilising sound and visuals.  This helps set the tone of the film/tv show and is essential as it helps the audience decide whether the want to continue watching.

A Clockwork Orange

"A Clockwork Orange" Title Sequence from Maksim Sokolov on Vimeo.

The title sequence to a clockwork orange is very simple, in that it basically just shows the key production and cast without really giving much away about the actual film. It sticks to a orange, black and white background, which suggests that what is black and white can be distorted by the orange. however this is probably the only real suggestion we have in the title sequence. The music was quite classical, but had strange noises added to it, to suggest that the film isn't a typical utopian Sci-Fi film. I think maybe another reason the opening sequence is so simple because the majority of the fans would have previously have read the book so they need no fancy opening sequence. I also think the producers didn't want to give anything away. However at the end there is a medium close up of the main character, which is all they needed. It creates an enigma as the audience doesn't yet know his significance and doesn't know why he is dressed the way he is, or even who he is.

Enter the Void

The Enter the Void  title sequence is very simplistic, with very little use of images, just writing to get the main points across. We would like to create something almost identical to this within our own film. The fast paced editing used within this title sequence portrays some form of unease, which is what we would like to create. It shows the audience from the beginning that the film is going to be disorientating, and it portrays that without giving away much about the film. I think this would be perfect for our film as it portrays exactly what we want, and therefore imitating this title sequence will help us achieve our goal, and create the atmosphere of disorientation from the offset.
